Upcoming life cycle dates for EFTPOS devices
6 Nov 2023
PCI 4.x no new connections date
We‘d like to remind the industry that the ‘no new connections’ date for PCI 4.x devices is coming up on 30 April 2024. This date has previously been communicated and remains unchanged.
After this date, PCI 4.x devices cannot be connected to the EFTPOS switching network.
The sunset date for PCI 4.x devices is set at 30 April 2026.
PCI 3.x sunset date
The PCI 3.x sunset date is also coming up next year on 30 June 2024. Any PCI 3.x devices still connected to the EFTPOS switching network after 30 June 2024 will be disconnected and unable to be used.
We strongly recommend an immediate and ongoing focus on replacement programmes so this deadline can be met.
We’re continuing to work closely with our acquiring participants to monitor the volume of PCI 4.x devices being connected to the EFTPOS switching network for the first time, and also the number of PCI 3.x devices being replaced monthly between now and 30 June 2024.
More details about the PCI 4.x no new connections and PCI 3.x sunset dates are available on our website.
Why do we have a device life cycle framework?
Our Consumer Electronic Clearing System governs how EFTPOS payments are processed in Aotearoa. As part of this process, we maintain a device life cycle framework that ensures any EFTPOS device being used is modern and secure enough to protect sensitive card data from unauthorised use.
Our framework is based on the international PCI PIN Transaction Security Point of Interaction Standard.
