Final call to replace 3.x EFTPOS devices

4 Jun 2024

Payments NZ sets device lifecycle dates based on our device lifecycle framework. This framework is in place to ensure sensitive card data continues to be protected from unauthorised use by making sure EFTPOS devices use secure technology.

The sunset date for 3.x devices is 30 June 2024. Any merchants still using 3.x devices should upgrade their devices by this date.

Merchants that are still using a 3.x device from 1 July 2024 will need to work with their terminal provider to replace their hardware as soon as possible.  To support acquirers, terminal vendors and resellers in their efforts to ensure compliance, the Payments NZ Board has approved temporary exemptions, expiring 30 September 2024, to enable this process to be completed before 3.x devices must be disconnected.

Separately, a small number of bespoke exemptions have been approved where it has been identified that it has not reasonably been possible for merchants and vendors to meet the sunset date due to circumstances beyond their control. These expire 31 March 2025.
