As a leader in Aotearoa New Zealand’s payments industry, at Payments NZ we acknowledge we have a kaitiaki (guardianship) role to support Māori whānau to achieve financial wellbeing and equity through a world class payments system. We are committed to te ao Māori, acknowledge He Whakaputanga 1835 and Te Tiriti o Waitangi 1840, by ensuring the representation and rangatiratanga of Māori within the payments network. We believe payments that enable equity for Māori will enable equity for all.
In this section we outline our te ao Māori strategy, Tō Mātou Haerenga, and the transformative journey we will take as a company by 2040, the bicentenary of the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
The name of this document, Tō Mātou Haerenga, speaks to the journey we are on and committed to into the future. It is a starting point and a si
gnificant step in our whakapapa as an organisation, and will continue to evolve as we travel and new possibilities appear.
This is an intergenerational strategy for Payments NZ. Our guiding whakataukī (proverb) for Tō Mātou Haerenga, was laid down by our Chief Executive to the industry in 2022 and encapsulates the overall challenge and aspirations of our vision for ourselves and our industry.

This whakataukī speaks of perseverance and endurance, refusing to let obstacles get in your way while striving to reach your goals and pursuing your destiny.
